Dear Lick:
Here are some of the points I would like to make after our
conversation Tuesday night.
1. The memo on the defense applications of computer vision
is called vis.cap[2,jmc], but I believe Steve Crocker has a copy and
also Lukasik does. I would like your reaction to it. Part of its
point is that ARPA support for basic research in computer vision is
justified, but the major point is that it is now technically reasonable
to pursue major defense applications - but not in the present projects.
I would like the opportunity to make an oral pitch that this is so and
would like you to think about what kind of organization could actually
realize the applications.
2. A major way of making interactive use of computers practical
is to standardize a powerful set of language facilities for interacting
with terminals and with files. There also needs to be a standard set
of file names.
3. I will try to get the leaders of the AI labs to meet. However,
I think the main problem with AI at present is a lack of theory rather
than a lack of management.
4.
